Painting progress of ‘Street Spirits’ 20″x16″
Photo reference kindly permitted by Jamie Hall www.jamiehallphotography.co.uk
Started on the background as always
Treating the top half like a painting on it’s own and working in the foxes from left to right.
Pastel is all about building up layers of colour from dark to light. I work across the fur gradually building up depth by adding the lighter values as I go.
Now I’ve blocked in that bottom half background. Pretty much the same order I do the top half in.
Ah the rubbish…it’s the theme of this painting that I love. The beauty of the wild next the ugliness of the urban.
The reflections are pretty much just a slightly looser version of what I’ve done on the top half I’m on the homeward stretch at this stage.

j'adore ton travail toujours de grande qualité, j'aime la vie que tu insuffles à tous ces regards d'animaux, et la précision de tes pastels. Un très grand bravo! 🙂
Emma Merci! I don't speak a lot of French but it's great as I can translate what I don't know and hoping this will improve my French too! You are my first comment on my new bog, so thank you! Please do share with any artist friends 🙂
I am a beginner using pastels and I would like to know if you do any flowers? I would like to get into doing them as I am thinking it would be easy for me to learn. Thanks.
Hi there, many thanks for visiting my blog. Flowers are something I don't paint a lot of on their own ie 'still life'. I do use flowers quite often in my backgrounds etc. The next post I make will have some flowers in it though and I'll try and explain that part of the painting in more detail. I paint a lot of wildlife and quite often the setting is a flowery field so please check back soon and I'll post something flower related 🙂
